A Better Foundation

It’s not uncommon for people to realize they never really placed all their trust in Jesus to save them. Even when you’ve given Him all your trust, you might at times worry that you somehow don’t qualify. The good news is that Jesus wants you to be certain you have eternal life. And you can be! (1 John 5:13)

What it takes to be saved

Acts 16:31 says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.John 6:29 says, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” As you see, there’s nothing about performance or how good you are in these verses. It really is all about believing in Jesus as Lord. That’s pretty simple and straightforward, but what does it mean to believe?

The Bible says that even the demons believe that Jesus is Lord (James 2:19, Mark 1:24). There is a difference between believing in your head and believing with your heart. If you say you believe with your heart that Jesus is Lord, but don’t do anything but acknowledge it, has your heart been changed? Probably not. True belief in Jesus should shake the very foundation of your life and cause you to rethink everything. Do you trust Jesus as Lord of your life, and are you willing to follow Him, no matter the cost? This takes time, but it is something you should desire if you truly believe and trust in Him.

And if we believe, what do we receive?

We all will surrender our life to something, whether we think about it or not. We could worship at the altar of success, or love, or acceptance, or anything else. But the amazing thing about surrendering our life to Jesus is that we are able to have a restored relationship with the creator of the universe. Worshipping God is the only thing ultimately worth giving our lives to. And we can have assurance that we are saved if we devote our lives to Him.

  • Those who come to Him will never be driven away (John 6:37).

  • God’s acceptance of you is not a mistake. He does not take back His gifts. He does not take back His calling (Romans 11:29).

  • You are kept in His grace, not by your good works, but by God Himself: "You are being kept by the power of God because you put your trust in Him and you will be saved from the punishment of sin at the end of the world" (1 Peter 1:5).
